Itinerary description
Easily accessible by public transport. Would make a perfect day hike from Milano, Italy. Furthermore, the trails are well marked and maintained.
Take a train to Tirano from Milano Centrale and change to the RhB Bernina train or express at Tirano. It will take around 1 hour 15 min to reach Ospizio Bernina from the Tirano train station. Needless to say about the Bernina express as it’s world famous + UNESCO world heritage mountain railway line with scenic views through the entire ride.
From Ospizio Bernina station, follow the trail indicator to Alp Grüm, easy walk, I saw very tiny kids with pacifiers walk the route. Also, the path is pretty scenic with views of Lago Bianco, Palü glacier and Val Poschiavo, you can also spot Miralago (the captivating blue lake that’s so reflective like a mirror).
The trail from Cavaglia to Alp Grüm has a moderate difficulty level, primarily because of the many rocks on the path and the steady descend, although nothing undoable. You will be able to see a milky blue glacial lake (Lagh da Palü) and 2 waterfalls along with getting a nice experience of walking through the woods in this section of the trail.
Once at Cavaglia, don’t miss checking out ‘’Il Giardino dei Ghiacciai di Cavaglia’’. It’s very close to the Cavaglia train station and the glacial water gushing through the many Marmittes is deafening and thrilling.
From Cavaglia, you can either continue hiking or board the Bernina express back to Tirano.
PS - Please carry some cash with you if you are planning on having a drink or ice cream or coffee break at one of the mountain hut restaurants as almost everyone of them accepted only cash.
