Itinerary description
The Paraje Natural Desembocadura del Guadalhorce occupies the land between the two arms of the Río Guadalhorce that empty into the Mediterranean on the southwest edge of Málaga, just east of the airport. (In fact, if you are flying into Málaga, you could could walk through this park and arrive at a hotel in the city without using a car or bus.) . A major birding area, the park is on the migration route between Europe and Africa and shelters more than 250 species of birds including flamingos and storks.
We spent Christmas Eve exploring the park's lagoons and trails. It seemed like half of Malaga was out here enjoying the sunshine with us: moms and dads with their children on bikes; cycling clubs enjoying the dirt tracks; birdwatchers setting up tripods in the five bird blinds; and swimmers tanning on the beach.
