Itinerary description

This is a short hike down to the beach through a relatively young coastal forest. There is good interpretive signage along the trail. The trail starts off easy but gets quite challenging as it nears the beach. Muddy sections were encountered at the time of this hike done during a very dry fall. Once the winter rains start it might become quite muddy.

The beach itself is a shallow sloping rock shelf with lots of interesting tide pools to explore - best seen on a receding tide. To avoid getting stranded by an incoming tide, be sure to check the tide tables before venturing out on the beach. This area is quite prone to fog. On the day of this hike, the fog came and went.

Views from the beach are across the tip of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. The waters here are frequented by ships going to/from mainland ports in Vancouver and Seattle.

The entry road down to the trailhead is about 4km long and very rough and the entry road is hard to spot. It is on Hwy. #14, 5.8 km SE from its intersection with Parkinson Rd. in Port Renfrew. There are toilets at the trailhead.

The Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an American Volksports Association rating of 1B at its beginning, changing to a 3D as it gets closer to the beach.
