Itinerary description

Peña Castil is a close neighbour and only slightly smaller than the iconic Naranjo de Bulnes but is the prominent peak visible from Sotres. We parked at the Majada de Robre which saves quite a lot of ascent. The road is quite rough in places however and I wouldn't be keen to drive it in anything other than dry conditions unless I had a 4x4. The first part of the walk up the Canal de las Moñas appears to be a gentle incline but is hard work and steepens as to rises. The Majadas de las Moñas has a number of abandoned inverales including some that look ancient having stone roofs. The small ridge that takes you onto the Vega de los Tortorios was covered with snow despite it being the end of July. After crossing the vega rising all the time there is a steep descent into the Collado Camburero. It is while standing above the Collado that you get your first really imposing views of Peña Castil and Naranjo. From this viewpoint there only appears to be a path up Castil at its base but once you start the ascent you find that there are plenty of small cairns to guide you to the summit. As with all routes in Spain best viewed in Topo-Raster (IDEE - IGN) map option.
