Itinerary description
Our Lady of Penrhys, a statue on a hillside in the Welsh Valleys is the focus of this pilgrimage, which starts at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff. Heading broadly north-west from Cardiff the route is mainly through green fields on paths, tracks and roads, with a little woodland and some sections through housing. Initially following lower ground it rises to higher ground in the later stages, crossing the high plateaus that separate one valley from another.
Conveniently completed over two days, this gpx track diverts to Pontyclun Railway station where you can catch an infrequent train back to Cardiff for the intervening night. After the statue the track drops down to Ystrad Rhondda train station. Apart from one particularly steep climb near the end the trail is easy, and although muddy in places in the winter months it can be walked at any time of year.
