Itinerary description
Disclaimer: If you have more than 5 days at your disposal, don't do the Huayhuash-Tour in 4,5 days. Take your time and spend as much time as possible in these fantastic mountains.
Unfortunately we had only 5 days to complete the trail, and - coming directly from Lima - were poorly acclimatized. Having no time to adjust to the height of the trail (4.000 - 5.000m throughout) we took advantage of the 1st days relatively smooth beginning: climbing from 3.250m to 4.200m walking the road from Llamac to Cuartelhuain. Fortunately this 4hour-walk was sufficient to acclimatize and the rest of the trip was cool as a breeze.
Day 1: Lllamac - Cuartelhuain - Carhuacocha (12 hours): get up a 5am, walk slowly for the first 20 kms, then hurry to reach Laguna Carhuacocha before sunset. This is by far the hardest day - you walk 38 kms, in thin air and cross two passes...
Day 2: Carhuacocha - Pampa Cuyoc: due to bad weather we chose the Carnicero-Trail and skipped the Siulá-Pass. After passing Huayhuash head slightly right (orientation red hill-side) and cross the Trapizero-Pass (5.100m), descending to Pampa Cuyoc.
Day 3: descend further to Huayllapa (there are 2 restaurants in the village which offer a marvellous potato-soup) - then ascend to Pampa Huatiaq, which you reach at about 2pm.
Day 4: after crossing 2 passes (pasos Tapush and Yauche) you reach Laguna Jahuacocha at about 1pm. A family near the lagoon offers trout and potato for lunch. They even sell Coca-Cola and beer.
Day 5: return to Llamac (4 hrs.) and Lima...
Remarks: If you have even less time, continue walking on day 3, cross Paso Tapush and use the oficial campsite in the Quebrada Gashapampa (about 3 more hours). On day 4 walk to Laguna Jahuacocha (don't skip this beautiful place), spend lunchtime there and head down to Llamac, which you will reach well before sunset.
Again: don't do this if have more time. You will miss so much of the incredible magic of the Cordillera Huayhuash.
