Itinerary description
Route to the highest peak of Pyrenees - Aneto.
Route was done on Oct 16th 2010 when the snow cover started from altitude of about 2600-2700m.
0,0km - Parking area of La Besurta. This point is accesible by car only after high summer season! In the summer, the bus from Benasque operates to this point. The path starts to the south in direction of refuge.
2,0km - Refuge. We pass next to the refuge and continue to the south. At this point there are few alternatives to follow, all are ok. More people joined us at this point from the refuge :-D The hike got more demanding from this point as we followed mountain springs, frozen in some parts - pretty dangerous!
5,4km - Small pass. Due to snow cover and lower visibility of the path, we have done a small mistake taking a route to the right to Maladeta and finally lost about 45min to come back to the same point and find the correct path, to the left.
8,0km - Glacier. This is where the real challange began. From this point, the route passes through glacier and crampons are a must. The last part of the glacier gets really steep until the famous Muhamad bridge!
9,8km - Muhamad bridge. The last 100m of hike are done through rock "bridge" called "The bridge of Muhamad" due to possition of the hiker :-D crowling on the rocks with forehead next to the rocks! This part is extremly difficult and possible in one direction at a time only. Many people do it with protection.
9,9km - The peak. The reward is worth a fatigue! Views are absolutely amazing in all directions. We had very good weather conditions and could see all the Pyrenees!
NOTE:
The descent is not recorded due to GPS's batery issue at low temperatures. We followed the same path until the pass. Later we took other alternative down to the refuge, following the route more to our right (east). The effort and time was the same at the end. All together the ascent took 5h30min and about the same for descent. At this time of the year, we have started before sun rise and finished after sun set! Crampons necessary !!
