Pico Castillón, Sierra de Peñarrubia
This walk starts just off the junction of the A357 and the C341. There is off road parking, and also a small car park for the Observatorio de Buitres en Peñarrubia (bird hide).
This walk is in two sections. Part one gets to the summit Pico Castillón going around the back of the mountain on the Senda de la Tuberia. It is more or less straight forward. There are times when the path disappears, but about 90 - 95% of the path is visible.
The Sierra de Peñarrubia mountain range has a majestic cliff face, and this area is popular for bird spotting.
From the summit you get amazing views of Ardales and the lakes, Teba and it’s castle, and Campillos, and also the lovely surrounding countryside.
My advice now is, go back the way you came, and keep the walk linear.
Part two is carry on along the top making your way down near to the quarry. The problem with this is that there are no paths and very few cairns to guide you. It was tricky finding a way through the boulders and rocks. There were lots of prickly shrubs, bushes and dried asparagus ferns. (We got a few cuts and grazes due to wearing shorts).
It’s a challenging hike and you wouldn’t attempt it on your own. And take some walking poles.
Finally reaching terra firma there were several paths back to the parking area, passing the bird hide which is in need of TLC, plus all the signboards have all the information weathered away.
There is very little shade on this walk. Only do the second section if you are an experienced hiker, but don’t do it alone.
All in all the views were amazing. A great walk but take care.
Moderate bordering on difficult if doing the full circuit.
