Itinerary description
Directions to Venta Los Condes, coming from Fuengirola, pass Mijas village on your left and follow the sign that says Coin - Alhaurin on the A387. Pass Km 7, just past an S bend,
you will find the Venta on your right and parking opposite,
(before the road sign Camino de Valtocado).
This route is the shortest to Pico Mijas, but also the steepest.
From Venta Los Condes we will take a shortcut for 10 minutes until we
get to the sign post that says Pico Mijas (orange trail).
From here we zig zag up the Pedegral ravine until we arrive onto the
Carril Nuevo (Pista Sur).
Turn right on the carril. About 50m take the path on your left and carry
on up the ravine. The final part of the accent is quite hard because of
the gradient. Just keep heading toward the meteorological observatory
known as ‘La Bola’. This is the highest peak which is 1151m above sea level.
The panoramic views are spectacular. You can see the Bay of Malaga and Sierra Nevada in the east and the Rif mountains, Pillars of Hercules and Gibraltar in the south.
The return journey follows the same route in reverse, back to Venta los
Condes for a well earned drink and a Tapas (1.80 e).
I have graded this walk difficult mainly because of the loose stones and rocks underfoot
I would highly recommend walking poles to keep one’s footing.
It is more of a hike than a walk, as it’s an uphill climb most of the way.
Some parts are easier than others. It is stony in many places and
coming back down can be slippery.
