Itinerary description

This spectacular circular hike, in the Serrella mountain range of the Alicante-province, is 18.73 km, with an elevation gain of near 1,600 meters. The hike passes ten peaks, cliffs and heights, where of six reaches +1,300 meters above sea level and four reaches +1,200 masl. This description is based on doing the trail counterclockwise.

QUATRETONDETA
This trail starts on the Parking-lot located approx. 350 meters after passing the southeastern outskirt of the rural town of Quatretondeta in the municipality of Concentaina.

AGULLES DELS FRARES
After about 800 meters from the parking you start a 500 meter steep and stony ascent to reach the foot of spectacular Agulles dels Frares ("needles of the brothers"), formations of limestone that rises from the mountain at heights of 10 to 50 meters. Passing the needles on the way upwards takes another 300 meters.

A STEEP STAGE
Then a very steep and stony stage of 300 meters remains before it flattens out 200 meters before reaching Penya Creu. This stage are the most demanding part of this trail, so be patient and don't blow away all your energy here. The reward is the remaining 9 "major" milestones. PS: The climb to Pico Serrella is maybe as demanding and is also very stony.

VIEWS
Soon after passing Morro dels Regalls (Pico Serrella) and before Mallá de Llop there is a special view point at 1,271 masl, the Panorámica Aitana, which name speaks for itself. Then, when arriving at Mallá de Llop, you can see Castell de Guadalest (the distance is only 5.7 km). Thereafter, at Plá de la Casa (the 4'th highest peak in Alicante), you have fantastic views to several of the surrounding mountain ranges and peaks, including Sierra de Mariola and its Montcabrer (the 3rd highest in Alicante) and Sierra de Benicadell with it's exciting peak.

MILESTONES
- Penya Creus (2.2 km)
- Penya l'Heura (2.8 km)
- Font Roja (3.7 km)
- Collado Borrell (4.6 km)
- Portet de Fageca (5.9 km)
- Penya del Corb (6.7 km)
- Pico Serrella (7.6 km)
- Mallà del Llop (9.0 km)
- Font del Noguer (9.9 km)
- Penya de la Terra Nova (11.1 km)
- Font gorriona (11.9 km)
- Collado Cima Pla De La Casa (12.8 km)
- Pla de la Casa (13.2 km)
- Nevera del Pla de la Casa (13.5 km)
- Font de l'Espinal (16.5 km)

OPTIONS
Many trails covering Sierra de Serrella includes a visit to La Serrella (The Recingle) located southwest of this route. And then often by excluding the eastern range. Of course you may try to reach all peaks in this mountain range if "fit for fight" - or instead - devide the trail in two separate tours.

I had lost the track 2-300 meters before coming back "on track", but nothing that caused problems. Just 3-4 stone terraces to pass in proper direction.

Trail marking (GR)

The abbreviation GR stands for Gran Recorrido, long-distance routes that are rarely hiked in their entirety; rather, hikers choose a specific section for their trips. A single stage of GR is doable in one day, but not the whole route.

Pla de La Casa in the exact moment of sunset. Some idiot had written the text "Serrella" on the cross. I have digitally erased it from this image. Is it not possible to leave the cross as it is? Why does someone absolutely have to tag a nice white cross? Un idiota havia escrit el text "Serrella" a la creu. L'he esborrat digitalment d'aquesta imatge. No és possible deixar la creu tal com està? Per què algú ha d'etiquetar una bonica creu blanca?

A long trip in late January, and just made it back to the parking an hour or so after the sunset, but the moon was luckily there to light up the trail a little bit.
