I did this trail clockwise from Parque das Merendas. The first half of the trek is pretty straightforward, but be prepared for some really steep climbs! There are sporadic signposts for the Poco das Pulgas which you should be able to follow on your way up.
The 2nd half of the route is far more intense and dangerous. Once you set off from the falls the signage becomes almost non existent. You'll have to use your intuition to work out which paths look like theyve been used recently, and then follow those. I had a couple of slips and falls which couldve been a lot worse than they ended up being. Branches will snap and the ground will give way, so be really careful as you're heading down.
Take this route seriously, it's very easy to have a really bad accident on this hike. Wear the right shoes, take your time and use your head. If you trust yourself as a hiker, the falls are well worth the trip.
I tried to do this hike today but had to turn back halfway through the first leg. Very difficult indeed! There were lots of slippery parts & fallen trees everywhere. The path was very overgrown and difficult to see.
I do think it would have been worth it, but the risk of falling was too high for me to continue on my own without cell service ;)
