In recent years, the city has been awarded several international awards for its urban quality and quality of life, accessibility and urban movility policy.
Pontevedra is surrounded by hills and located on the edge of an estuary at the mouth of the Lérez river by the sea, at the end of the Ria de Pontevedra, in the heart of the Rías Baixas.
It has 90.000 of population.
The city is known as The Good City " (name attributed by the French author Jean Froissart in his Chronicles in the 14th century
Pontevedra is an important administrative, political, judicial, military, historical and cultural centre. In the 16th century it was the largest city in Galicia.
The name of the town derives from the Latin pontem veteram, which means "old bridge" and refers to the first bridge that the Romans built to cross the Lerez River and the Ria de Pontevedra.
This bridge is the one you see on your way out of the city.

Church of The Virgin Pilgrim
Construction began in 1778 and it is one of the most symbolic and important buildings in the city of Pontevedra. Mixture of barroque and neoclassical forms. Its floor plan is inspired by a scalop shell The barroque façade contains the Pilgrim Virgin in the middle, Saint Roque on the left and Saint James on the right, all three dressed as pilgrims. On top theres another statue which represents the faith.
San Francis Convent and Pontevedra Letters
Information about the convent: There is a gothic church attached to the convent. It followed the Franciscan order, because was flunded by Francis of Assisi. The order adheres to the teachings and spiritual disciplines of the founder & extreme poverty required of members . The convent was built in SXIV. Due to its strategic location, the convent has served as a refuge and fortress on several occasions throughout its history. In 1809, it was the French troops who took refuge in it to defend themselves from the people who besieged them and forced them to surrender on 28 February. The convent is currently occupied by four Franciscan friars.The convent is home to the community kitchen St. Francis, which feeds a number of needy people from Monday to Saturday.[
Basilica of Santa Mary the Major
Catjolic church dating from 16th century consegrated as a basilica on 10th of January in 1962 by the Pope. 1931 declared a historic-artistic monument belonging to the National Artistic Treasure. Considered Pontevedra's main church. Located in the same place where a small Romanesque church used to stand, which was demolished in the 15th century. Its construction was commissioned by the Guild of Seamen, the oldest civil entity in Pontevedra and the oldest sea guild in Spain It is a Gothic style building, with influences from the Portuguese Manueline style.

The main one, facing west, presents a wide staircase to access it. The structure is in the form of an altarpiece, with three abundantly decorated bodies (following the Plateresque style), the work of the masters Cornielles de Holanda and Juan Noble, and dated 1541. The door has a half-point arch framed by sculptures of St Peter and St Paul. Above the decoration in base to medallions in the shape of scallop shells The façade is crowned by a calvary and the typical stonework of Portuguese Manueline style.
Saint Domingo Convent runes
was a convent declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1895. This is the oldest of all Pontevedra Museum’s buildings. The only sections of the original buildings that have been conserved are the main apse, formed by five apses, exceptional in Galician gothic architecture, and part of the south wall of the church and the entrance to the chapter of the Santo Domingo convent, founded in around 1282, although the work on the conserved temple did not begin until 1383, continuing through the 15th century.
