Itinerary description

Nice, leisurely round trip along the ornithological trail (Cami Cala Bóquer) on gravel tracks and stony paths through the Bóquer Valley to Cala Bóquer.

Port de Pollença is the most northerly town in Mallorca, situated on the Bay of Pollença about 6 km east of Pollença.
In Port de Pollença walk from the Tourist Information at the beach/harbour along the sea/beach. Turn left into Avinguda de Bocchoris. Cross the Carrer de Formentor and on the other side a gravel path leads straight ahead, enclosed by a small knee-high wall, to the large roundabout on the ring road. At the top of the hillside one can already see the building of the Finca Bóquer with the tower and its battlements. Along the unsurfaced access road an iron gate is passed and 100 m after the gate walk across the court yard of the farmstead. The grounds of the finca are left through another gate after which, keeping right, one ascends a short section of concrete path. The broad path heads for the rocky mountain chain of the Serra del Cavall Bernat and then soon after, squeezes between two huge boulders. The Bóquer valley opens up ahead where stately dwarf palms line the path and countless orchids blossom in spring. Approx. 25 minutes after the finca a fork marked with a cairn is reached at the Coll del Moro. The path on the left leads down to Cala Bóquer.
The path divides several times, but one can see the bay clearly ahead like a miniature fjord. The pebble beach is an ideal place for a swim if the sea is calm. Return the same way to Port de Pollenca.

The Boquer Valley (Catalan: Vall de Boquer) is a scenic valley running 3 km north-east from the town of Port de Pollença to the sea at Cala Boquer. The Roman city of Bocchoris dates back to c. 1400 BC and has given name to the Boquer valley and presumably lay at the present Finca Bóquer where the valley starts. The valley is a protected area and well known for its variety of birds and thus popular with bird-watchers.

Talayot village in the Boquer Valley:
Bocchoris is one of the most important megalithic villages in the island, it is considered a construction of the colonizers around 1000 b.C. In the different excavations pottery remains and iron pieces have been found; an important part of its settlers were the warrios called slingers, as their weapon was a sling. It is considered that Bocchoris was formed by several nucleus of population and that it was one of the most important cites of the island. Even thouh some sources indicate that in the 3rd century AC Bocchorum still existed, the city would be absorbed by Pollentia, located next to the nowdays Alcudia, founded in 123 a.C. by the consul Quintus Caecilius Metelus.

Birdlife of the Bóquer valley:
Being a space close to the sea and, at the same time, having high cliffs which enclose the valley, Bóquer is a place where a great diversity of birds can be found. There are birds related to the marine realm, but also the most representative birds of prey of the Mallorcan geography can be observed.
Good examples are the Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae), the cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus), or the red kite (Milvus milvus). As for seabirds, some specimens might be the yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis), the Audouin's Gull (Larus audouinii), and the cormoran (Phalacrocrax aristotelis).

Flora of the Bóquer Valley:
The route to Bóquer is a typical example of Pollença's virgin coast, with big reed (Ampelodesmos mauritanica) extensions, Mediterranean dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis) and the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis). A typical species of theses places is the small tree of the pistachio (Pistacia lentiscus), a bush that in Bóquer has developed in such a way that it gets tree-shaped dimensions. During the walk one often finds pointed cushion shaped plants like the germanders (Teucrium subspinosum and Astralagus balearicus), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), rough bindweed or sasaparille (Smilax aspera) and rockrose (Hypericum balearicum). Sporadicaly, one will be able to see some
species of great botanical value like the dead horse arum lily (Dracunculus muscivorus), the Mallorca foxglove (Digitalis minor) or the Majorcan peony (Paeonia cambessedesii). In the coastal rocky area one finds species like the samphire (Crithumum maritimum) and several species of rock-sea lavenders (Limonium spp.) adapted to resist the wind strength and hight salt concentrations.

Public transportation: Bus 301 from and to Palma.
