Itinerary description
I never say no the a lunch on the beach. Obviously, it's easy and convenient to jump in the car and drive straight from Porto Brandão to one of my favourite restaurants on the Costa da Caparica. But of course it's even better to first 'earn' that lunch and walk there!
Coming from Lisbon you can catch a ferry in Belém. In only 10 minutes you'll cross the river Tejo. The ferry will take you directly to Trafaria. You can also choose to come and visit 'my village' Porto Brandão first for a coffee and catch the next possible ferry to Trafaria. The hiking route starts at the Estação Fluvial (boat station) of Trafaria. Note: I included the boat ride in this hike, the actual number of walking kilometres will be more or less 11,5 km.
You follow the perfectly marked route (part of the GR11-E) in the direction of Fonte da Telha. The diversity of the hike is great! Tipical (non touristic) Portuguese villages, beautiful panoramic views over the Costa Caparica and Lisbon, interesting landmarks like the Forte da Raposeira, Forte de Alpena and the Convento dos Capuchos and peaceful nature (dunes, forest, farmland).
Halfway you'll pass the village Capucho where you can enjoy a coffee at the friendly local restaurant Capuchinhos. On the Costa de Caparica you'll find beach bars to suit every taste. I prefer the more simple ones like Praia do Castelo (no need for dressing up like going clubbing here). After the hike I'm happy with a well deserved jar of cold 'vinho de pressão' and a plate of sardines. Possibly the last fresh ones of the season...
Enjoy your hike! <3
