Itinerary description
Extension of the waymarked trail PR05 TER, which is one-way, by doing a fast return to the point of origin via calm and pleasant sideroads. This increases the trail length of PR05 from 5.7 km to 9.2 km and walking time by ~1h, but you get back to the starting point (especially suitable if you use a rental car; while there are bus connections in São Sebastião, they do not take you back to the starting point of the walk).
The red-yellow waymarked trail explores some of the XVI and XVII century fortifications along the south coast, leading through a Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species (in this case protected bird species).
Official descriptions of PR05 are available at

At the village of São Sebastião we had a picnic lunch break in the garden of "Casa do Povo", after that GPS remained switched off for a few hundred meters. Your way back is now always downhill on sideroads with little traffic.
At km 8.3, where to the left of the road is a fountain with a large trough for the cattle, divert also to the left and continue on a narrow track that edges along fields and meadows and leads you back to the coastal road. There, turn right and after a few hundred meters reach the starting point of the walk. If you have time, why not try out one of the plenty rockpools on the way to Angra to Heroismo, or in the opposite direction, those of nearby Porto Martins, considered to be among the best of the island.
