Itinerary description

How to get:
There are no buses to pico Areiro. But there are buses from Funchal to Santana that have a stop in Poiso (56, 103 - bus company "Horarios do Funchal"). And from Poiso you will have to get a taxi to Areiro.
What we did:
The sunrise is the most beautifull time at pico Areiro. So we decided to get to Areiro at sunrise by taxi. We tried to do this feat twice, and just the second attempt was a success. First time there was a too huge black cloud about 1 km high at the top af the mount. And pico Areiro was in the middle of the cloud. The temperature was -2C (at the coast it was +20C). The wind was so strong that I could not first open the door of the car. We tried to go down, but we could not do a few steps being afraid of be blowed away into an abyss. So we had to return home that day.
Two days later we took a taxi from Funchal before 40 min to sunrise again. And at sunrise we were at the peak. There was a small white cloud at the top. The cloud was about 200 metres high. We got through this cloud by car and at pico Areiro we find ourselves at the top of the cloud. The temterature was +5C.
The route has an Y-track. The shorter route is easier and passes 3 tunnels. So you sould provide yourselves with a light. The longer route is a bit harder, has many steep descents and ascents.
As a whole, the route is not hard if the weather is good. But if the weather is bad, the hike might be impossible.

Muy recomendable, con vistas espectaculares durante todo el camino. Se recomienda llevar ropa de abrigo, hace frío en las cimas. No hay fuentes en el trayecto, pero sí un refugio a 0.5 km de punta ruivo.

The company DO IT MADEIRA can help you with this - I did this hike with them, they provide a transfer for 30€ per person with pick up and drop of in accommodation included! They take us to Pico do Arieiro and then pick us up in Achada do Teixeira, where the finish of the hike. This is the BEST and AFFORDABLE way to do this amazing hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo!
