This trail leads you through the higher parts of western São Miguel, passing by some volcanic cones and their crater lakes. At the highest viewpoints you have good panoramic views over both the North and South coast of São Miguel. Since most of the trail is at an altidude above 800 m, it is advised to take it in good weather, when clouds are higher up. I would rank the trail easy in fine weather, after rain the section after km 4 can be muddy.
Note that we parked our car and started the trail a few hundred meters away from the official trailhead (where the parking lot was full).
Towards the end of the trail, the GPS erroneously jumped upwards from 750 to almost 1300 m (max. elevation is 870 m).
Following the end of the official PRC05, we explored a bit Lagoa do Canário.
