You explore the hillside above the village of Maia (known for its rockpools, which I consider among the best of the island of São Miguel), followed by a walk through the village and then on the cliffs above the coast, passing by various viewpoints (miradouros).
The trail presents no particular difficulties and we found it very well maintained. Apart from some sections on roads, initially you follow access tracks into the fields and meadows, and towards the end dirt roads on top of the cliffs.
Our trail time included a 1 h picnic break at Miradouro do Frade.

The rockpools are located at the bottom of the cliff and protected from the open sea by a string of tiny islets.

From here you have a good view towards the west, with the capes of Ponta Formosa and Ponta do Cintrão, and with good weather to the northwest coast at a distance of 30 km.
