Itinerary description

Official trail PRC36 SMI, waymarked red-yellow, detailed description can be downloaded from
https://trails.visitazores.com/en/trails-azores/sao-miguel/pedra-queimada-lajinha-degredo
You explore the hillside above the village of Maia (known for its rockpools, which I consider among the best of the island of São Miguel), followed by a walk through the village and then on the cliffs above the coast, passing by various viewpoints (miradouros).
The trail presents no particular difficulties and we found it very well maintained. Apart from some sections on roads, initially you follow access tracks into the fields and meadows, and towards the end dirt roads on top of the cliffs.
Our trail time included a 1 h picnic break at Miradouro do Frade.

The rockpools are located at the bottom of the cliff and protected from the open sea by a string of tiny islets.

I could not find out the name of this bathing spot of natural rockpools. You can get down to the sea and swim here but there are no facilities.
