Itinerary description

The walking route starts in Zona Recreativa. Perform a weather log at the start of the expedition. Descend from the parking lot and border Presa de las Niñas on the right for 1.8 km, up to the southest end of Presa de las Niñas where you will reach the irrigation ditch wall. Start Music Playlist activity. Get close to the irrigation ditch wall and follow it for 0.7 km (you will pass by some rocky picnic tables) until you reach a tunnel. Instead of entering inside the tunnel, go up the hill following the path in the south-east direction. You will rejoin the irrigation system (acequia). Follow the rocky path beside the acequia for 0.5 km until you reach the front barrier of a reservoir in the area of El Majadal.

Cross the damn wall so that you rejoin the acequia at your left. Follow the acequia wall for 600 metres until the acequia is finished. Now you will find yourself in an big opening. At your left, you have the ravine and Soria. After leaving the acequia, follow a shepherd path marked by big cairns for 900 metres (in your way, you will find two wooden signposts, which have written on them: “Vistas de Presa de Soria” and “Llanos de las nieves”)until you reach a second acequia. Follow this acequia for 500 metres in the west direction until you reach a part where the acequia becomes thicker. Take some time to rest and complete one of the team building games. (45 minutes max.) IF you continue following the acequia you will reach then dam wall of Embalse del Salto del Perro and Cuevas del Majadal (image below). Investigate and record data from Cuevas del Majadal (30 min.). The information collected will be added to the Presa Research activity project. Explore the caves, where we will find aboriginal paintings and other historical heritage formations.

Once the investigation is finished, go back to the thick area of the acequia. Now YOU MUST head in the south direction, where you will see a dirt path you must descend. After 400 metres you will pass by a few palm trees and you will ascend a small hill at your left, still following the path! After the descending the hill (10 metres descent) you will get to an acequia.
DON'T FOLLOW THE ACEQUIA, but head in the south-west direction, following the dirt path until you reach a proper track, which you must follow downhill for 0.7 km until you reach an area of small houses. This is the final fork of the descent:

We turn right in the fork and follow the new path. In 5 minutes time we will reach a tiny reservoir at our right, follow the path and continue straight through Carretera del Pinar in the east direction. The descent is over and now we are in Barranquillo de Andrés. Follow this road without deviating until you find a giant cactus. Take a photo to add to your Flora and Fauna activity.

Now join the GC-505 and you will reach a crossing with various signs.

Turn right heading to Soria and pass Av. Leonardo Hernández Pérez. If you follow the road you will find some waste bins to throw all your rubbish in! Now turn right until you reach a football pitch on the outskirts of Barranquillo de Andres. LUNCHTIME.

Here we will start the Physical activity, before setting off record your heartbeat. Then, if you are not wearing your reflective coats, it is the perfect time to put them on as you will need to follow the GC-505 to get to Soria. During the journey record your heartbeats at least 3 more times. After following the GC-505 for 1.7 km you will reach Restaurante Casa Fernando (take final heartbeat here). You can even buy a dessert for tonight in Supermercado Marta. Take your time to rest as the next part will be an ascend up to camp site. Remember to do a weather log here.

Keep following the GC-505 to your, passing by Panadería Artesanal Mejías for 1 km until you reach a fork. There will be a light post at your right, various palmtrees and an ascending rocky path at your left:

Follow this path and start the Motivational song activity. Whilst ascending record and video a chant/song which will be used in your second day of expedition (create lyrics too). After ascending 500 metres you will reach the first fork, turn left and keep ascending. 200 metres later you will reach a second fork, turn right and follow the narrow path to Salto del Perro in the Caidero de Soria. (DANGER ZONE)

After crossing Salto del Perro follow the pathway to keep ascending and continue with the activity. The ascent is 1.3 km long and it will be over when you reach the road at the top of the cliff. Enjoy the fascinating views of the valley below you! Take some time to stop, take a breath and drink some water!

Join the tarmac road and approximately 200 metres later you will see a tow-path at your left. Follow it until you reach Arbol de Casandra, very close to Presa de las Niñas. Here you must finish the Motivational song activity and complete your research of Presa de las Niñas (for Presa Research activity). Plus do last weather log of the day and take photos of Pino de Casandra, might be useful for Flora and Fauna research and other activities!

After finishing your activities, head north following the tow-path. Cross the white gravel area at the furthest north end of the Presa de las Niñas and head up to Zona Recreativa. End of expedition 1.
