Itinerary description
The route starts facing up to the imposing wall of the mountain Major de Montsant, in the Natural Park of the Sierra de Montsant and continues climbing the Codolar degree, that besides being quite straight and steep, it has three passes where is necessary to climb with the help of metal steps stuck in the rock.
At the beginning of the level there is the chapel of St. Joan del Codolar.
The ascent affords an impressive view of the Prades mountains.
Later, the track goes down until the Montsant Shelter in Albarca, a small and beautiful village located in the hilly north-eastern Montsant, over 800 meters.
To go back, to the St. Joan del Codolar chapel, follow a partial retracing of the ancient route of Els Cartoixans or La Llisera, which linked Albarca and Escaladei.
The route is easily followed since the Llisera track is signposted as the GR 174. You keep always to the same height along a very gentle slope until you come to the St. Joan del Codolar chapel, in under an hour. The itinerary is a lovely one and the route takes you past different spots where you get lovely views of the Serra de Montsant Natural Park.
Finally, to go back to Cornudella de Montsant, follow the same track initially used to reach the chapel.
