Itinerary description
Puerta de Escaleruela- El Torcal
Antequera - Villanueva de la Concepción
Part of GR 245 - "Camino Mozárabe de Santiago"
This is a walk around the area of the iconic El Torcal karsitic rock formations. Start is at Venta Molino Blanco on the road south of Antequera.
The walk goes along the valley floor on an easy graded track from which we will have views of Antequera. We continue on a farm track where we will have great views of Camorro Alto (1378M).
The path will then take us onwards to the Col between the Torcal Massif (Sierra Palada) and the Sierra Chimenea (called the Puerto de la Escaleruela). The path narrows and we climb steeply for about 30 minutes, on a good walking surface. This is a seriously steep climb, requiring several stops, but is on a good underfoot surface.
The Col leads to a high plateau, with great views of the El Torcal karsitic limestone formations.
We cross the Plateau and descend on a wide track at first, with great views of the valley below. The path continues descending, narrower in places, between the last foothills of the massif. Here, the massif of El Torcal towers 100 metres above us, as we continue across mainly agricultural land.
The remainder of the walkgoes through olive trees and is generally flat, or descending, with the exception of just one easy gradient, before the descent into our final destination of Villanueva de la Concepcion.
Underfoot conditions are generally good throughout our walk.
Part of the trip is along the Jacobs pilgrim route to Santiago: "Camino Mozárabe de Málaga" Santiago. (See URL)
