Itinerary description

Access to starting point from El Escorial via Pista Forestal that once was a famous climb in the Vuelta de España. Now the pavement has deteriorated too much for "comfortable" biking. Anyway, enough parking place at the Puerto de Malagón, and before starting to walk, take a few minutes to visit the Pozo de la Nieve, which used to be the natural refrigerator for King Felipe II. Climb to Abantos (waypoint 1)is smooth and easy. Than back to the GR10 which is pretty wide at the beginning, because it is also used as a cortafuego (firebreak). When arriving at Refugio La Naranjera you should look for a small path at your right-hand side, on the other side of a low brick wall. After 20-30 meters you will have a spectacular view on the Valle de los Caidos (waypoint 2). Going downhill from the Refugio you will see at your right-hand side a beautiful meadow: an ideal spot for a picknick. Then, with a full estomac, follow the road back to the starting point.

- Route milestones: Puerto de Malagón (1.540 m) - Abantos (1.753 m) - GR10 - San Juan (1.734 m) - Refugio La Naranjera (1.605 m) - Fte. De las Negras (1.565 m) - return to Puerto de Malagón via road (or pathway close to road).
