Category: Hill Walk
Distance: 8 km
Grading: Medium to Heavy
Meeting Place: Mijas Tourist Office
Itinerary:
This is an ´out and back´ walk starting at Mijas village and up into the hills behind where magnificent views can be seen on a clear day. To enjoy the walk a good level of fitness is required and although the pace will be slow, it is a steady uphill walk for about 500 metres. Walking poles will be useful.
The walk starts by taking a winding route through the village, onto the hills, leaving the chapel to the left and then continuing uphill for about 2 hours. The walk picks up the yellow route (Cañada Gertrudis) until it picks up the blue route (Puerto Málaga).
The views can be seen on the way up, on the way down and over the pass at the top.
The path is a good walking surface all the way but does have many loose stones. It is about two persons wide most of the way but at times it is on the edge of the hill/mountain. There is therefore a little exposure but it is safe at all times. The walk is open to the sun so bring a hat and plenty of water. There will be time for a quick snack at the top.
Directions to the Meeting Place
The Tourist Office is in the centre of Mijas. Drive to the village up the winding road from Fuengirola or come across on the top road from Coin direction. Both directions finish at the roundabout with a BP garage almost on the corner. Continue driving into town until you see a "P" parking sign pointing left. Turn left and travel down the steep hill towards the parking. Parking is 1 Euro per day. The Tourist Office and toilets are at the top of the parking garage, to be reached via an elevator on the outside of the parking building. Meeting place is opposite the Tourist Office entrance.
