Puigpunyent - Font des Pi - Puig de Galatzó - Pas de na Sabatera - Boal de ses Serveres - Estellencs

The town of Puigpunyent (bus stop) - Font des Pi - Coll des Carniceret - Puig de Galatzó 1027 m - Pas de na Sabatera - Coll de Sa Moleta Rasa 618 m - Sa Copa d’Or viewpoint 493 m - Pas des Cossis 469 m - Boal de ses Serveres 415 m - GR 221 - Ma-10 Road km mark 97 - Coll des Pi - Estellencs (bus stop).

The pyramid shaped Puig de Galatzó (1027 m high) is the southernmost of the Tramuntana / Mallorca mountains above 1000 meters and called Mallorca’s Matterhorn.

This walk ascends from the southeast / Puigpunyent and descends to the northwest / coast (the classic path).

The path:
From Puigpunyent (bus stop) take the road Carretera de Galilea Ma-1032 and after 0.45 km turn right onto Cami de sa Teulera. In a corner there is a sign announcing the address of the “Puig de Galatzó-Es Ratxo Reserve”. Continue along this paved road and after 0.95 km it forks. Continue on the right as the “Puig de Galatzó Reserve” sign indicates.
Continue on a slight ascent. After 2.5 km the walk passes in front of the “Son Silenci” finca/estate that can be seen high up on the right. Further ahead the road reaches a small esplanade where the path forks again after 3.65 km. Continue to the right (and NOT towards the “Galatzó Reserve” to the left).
After 4.0 km the track passes in front of the Xabodhi finca/farm on the left, and continue until another fork after 4.55 km. Continue straight ahead. After 5.20 km turn right and follow the unpaved path that leads directly to the Font des Pi after 5.65 km. Continue straight and climbing. A little further up, after 5.85 km the path intersects perpendicularly with another wider path and there is a milestone: follow the path to the right.
Continue on to right and continue climbing until one sees a fire watch tower after 6.45 km, installed on a small esplanade next to a stone wall. This is the Coll des Carniceret (713 m).
A path (which is not easy to spot) leaves this esplanade to the left. Soon this path becomes more evident. The climb is now steeper, until a hill where two milestones placed one in front of the other and that show where we have to continue. The path now descends and runs along the side of the mountain and with magnificent views of the Es Puntals mountain range and Estellencs to the right as well as the prominent rock in front called “Es Bisbe” (847m) to the left.
The path crosses a rossaguera (stones) after 6.9 km and from here begins to ascend again until it reaches a small plateau where there is a crossroads and signposts after 7.35 km (815 m). Follow the signpost “Puig de Galatzo 25 min”. The path to the top is unmissable as it is marked by numerous milestones. In some sections it is advisable to use the hands for safety. From the top there is fantastic 360 degrees views. Return from the peak to the signposted crossroads after 8.6 km and follow the sign to the Pas de na Sabatera and the Boal de Ses Serveres (11.75 km), and later the GR-221 to Estellencs passing Coll des Pi after 15.4 km and ending at the Estellencs bus stop after 17.5 km.

Puigpunyent:
The name Puigpunyent, which means “pointed mountain” comes from the Puig del Galatzó peak. A village surrounded by valleys planted with orange and almond trees, with terraces where ancient olive trees grow. A town divided into two traditional quarters: the older Son Bru and the more modern La Vila, which sprang up around the church. Agriculture, livestock farming and forestry were the principal economic driving forces until the mid-20th century, traditionally associated with the activity of the large estates. As for the built heritage, look out for the Church of La Asunción de la Virgen María, constructed between the 17th and 19th centuries and home to a 14th century gothic image of Our Lady of Navigators, which came from the Cathedral, and the mannerist reredos of Our Lady of Loreta, which dates back to 1597.
