Itinerary description

See for more hikes on Fuerteventura: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/6117e/41364/

This hike required a bit of planning. Since it is a linear hike from the most southern point of Fuerteventura (Punta Jandia) to the village Morro Jable, you have to arrange transportation to Punta Jandia.

Fortunately, there is a very cool 4x4 minibus going from Morro Jable to Punta Jandia. In our case the route was Morro Jable - Cofete - Punta Jandia. I am not sure if this is the official route, because the flyer with the timetable suggested that the bus would first stop in Punta Jandia and then would continue to Cofete. Nevertheless, the trip with the 4x4 minibus through the mountains to Cofete on the west coast certainly added great scenery to the trip.

The bus left at 10.00 h sharp from the bus station of Morro Jable. Don't miss it, because the next bus leaves at 14.00 h and will not leave you enough time to walk back to Morro Jable. Note that the bus station is land-inward, outside the center of Morro Jable. The 4x4 minibus also stopped at the harbor of Morro Jable. See http://www.cabildofuer.es/portal/p_14_final_Distribuidor_2.jsp?seccion=s_fnot_d4_v1.jsp&contenido=6389&tipo=8&nivel=1400 for up to date info on the departure time. More info may also be obtained from http://www.maxoratabus.com/tiadhe/en/. You can have a look at the route of the bus here: http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=xrrkegmghgoclhag.

It took about 75 minutes to reach Punta Jable (via Cofete) with the 4x4 minibus, and all this for only 2.50 euros per person!

The first 10 km of the hike from Punta Jandia to Morro Jable are the most interesting. You can precisely follow the dirt road (GR-131) or, like we did, try to walk as much as possible on the beach along the sea. The scenery is really great. After about 6 km we stopped for lunch, coincidentally at a very small cave, probably the Cueva de la Negra.

The last 10 km are quite straightforward via the GR-131 trail through a rather monotonous landscape. However, at the end when you get closer to Morro Jable, the scenery becomes more hilly and interesting again.

Although the track is mainly quite flat, you have to climb and descent quite a lot of little hills. In combination with the length of the hike, this makes the hike a bit harder than you would expect.

The hike itself is not the most special hike we ever did. But the combination of the spectacular ride with the 4x4 minibus to Punta Jandia, and the pleasant walking next to the shore in the first half of the hike, gives this hike a score of 5 out of 5 points.
