Itinerary description
Artenara - San Pedro
This is the official route of the S 97 trail. It's very hard to find a GPX or any digital info on it, and having an app like Wikilok or Komoot is essential, as there are some confusing signs or crossings. Overall, the signing on Gran Canario is not optimal, like the official S trails are almost completely unmarked, and it seems the whole circuity has never really been digitally reworked.
That said, it is absolutely beautiful, like most of the Gran Canaria trails. As it's mostly descending, be sure to have trained knees and good shoes, for some of the stony and steeper passages. Have a coffee or meal at the beautiful terrace of the El Hornillo refuge mid way. I guess we had a slight problem finding the trail just behind the dam wall, as we wound up in some sort of old stone canal that winds along the lake for some time - probably not the official route but all we could sind. You'll have to climp a couple of meters in the end of it to get back on the stoned road. But a very interesting little detour.
