Itinerary description

sa Calobra - Escorca torrent de pareis. We parked our car at Escorca, and hitchhiked to Sa Calobra. A taxi is a good alternative, it will cost you about 40-45 euro's, but you might have to wait for it for 45 minutes. From the beach we hiked into the gorge. Doing it in this direction is the preferred route, because going up is much safer and easier than down, though a little harder on physical fitness. You will have to search a lot, because the signposts are virtually non existent, and some parts are extremely tricky and hard to find, though nowhere too hard for a person in good physical shape. Two times, the path goes besides the gorge to get over, be aware. You can use my route mainly for the getting out of the gorge part, in the gorge it is quite useless, because the map is dark, find your own way. We did this mid June, 30 degrees. We brought 4,5 litres of water, of which I used 3,5. Bring plenty of protein and carb rich food. Enjoy, contact me if you need more info.

Looking to try this in late April. We’ll be with rucksacks as we are without a car and are walking from South to North. I’m a bit nervous about it but your advice on water (and food) is super helpful

A few things. I’ve seen the height gain on this route vary dramatically - any idea why? Your total time was 7:15 ish. Was this a leisurely pace/ long lunch or was this more or less the time needed. Did you get water at the marked fountain? Most of the height gain seems to be at the end - is this after the technical bit

Late April can already be quite warm, but a bigger problem will then be the amount of river water still flowing through the gorge, so prepare to have to do the first part bare footed to avoid your hiking boots from getting wet. Bring indeed sufficient water and snacks.
This is the toughest gorge I ever did, because sometimes I had to crawl on my stomach underneath a small cavity to be able to proceed. Look for circles on stones, they kind of mark the way, but I didn't see them until almost finished. The elevation in the gorge itself is minor, but because of searching and climbing, it takes quite a long time. By the end of the gorge, it is still a few kilometres ascending, so the elevation is just circling up towards the main road again, I think about 500-600 vertical metres which took us another 1,5 to 2 hours. Just like you've done a zillion curve driving down to the beach😆. The variation is probably due to no gps in the gorge itself. There was no water at the fountain, but never count on fountains or springs in Spain, they're usually empty🤣
