If there was one thing we had in mind to do during our trip to Vietnam, it was a good trekking through the valleys of Sa Pa and the ascent of the highest mountain in Indochina: Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan) (3,143 m). We were anxiously waiting to discover how the weather would respect us during the rainy season and immersed in a valley that is usually cloudy, pouring rain or with thick fog. Well, there was no better time or better days to enjoy the beautiful Sa Pa Valley. Two days with Hmong families and in the company of more people willing to wear out their soles a little. With some we would end up having great moments of laughter and not to forget! Let's get to know Sa Pa!

Sa Pa (Sapa) - Mao Lenh Family Homestay - Sử Pán

First of the two days of trekking that our beautiful stay in Sa Pa would bring us. Without a doubt, one of the most anticipated days of our trip to Vietnam. Valleys and mountains, rice fields, views and panoramic views that promised in photography. It looks like a painting... we thought! Will it all be real? Let's check it out! We begin the excursion!

START:

We arrived in Sa Pa, from Hanoi, on a sleeping bus, enough to sleep badly for one night. It is a bus in which the seats are almost horizontal, in order to be able to travel while sleeping. It was 5:30 and we had just arrived in Sa Pa, where we left the bus to wait for the Hmong women who would come to pick us up. With us, more people in a similar situation! After a long time of waiting, they come to look for us to take us to breakfast, where we begin to start a conversation with the companions with whom we would share the trek: Álvaro, Andrea, Carlos, Amparo, Raúl and Irene. We would have a great time with the latter during our stay in Sa Pa! The Hmong women were already there, ready to teach us all the secrets of the valley, its people and a way of life that gives us a lot to think about, especially how lucky we are to be able to enjoy almost anything. A very special greeting to Mao, "chief" of the expedition and Mu, our guide through the valley.

DESCRIPTION:

After a good breakfast, we began the route, leaving the town of Sa Pa, all behind Mu, a Hmong woman who would be in charge of showing us the area. Mu, in flip flops, and the rest, dressed as best we could to face two days of intense hiking.

We follow a couple of detours to leave the town of Sa Pa. The second detour will leave us on the starting path, a path that already seems demanding from the first steps!

The first part of the route goes uphill, quite demanding, but which we overcome without too many problems. The path narrows and there are completely muddy areas, the result of the recent rains. All in single file, including Mu, another woman who was carrying a basket as a backpack and two more girls who did not hesitate to accompany us during the route, making various crafts with all kinds of nature. Without a doubt, some artists!

As we gain altitude, we cross several crop fields. The first thing we will see will be a green tea field, very beautiful! We paid attention not to slip, since the path was quite muddy.

We continue the route following one more detour, at which point several more people join the trek: a couple from Ireland and two girls from Egypt. A multicultural trekking!

We continued climbing, managing to have a good perspective of Sa Pa, between clouds, since the day was quite cloudy. We cross a small bridge to cross the path of one of the many streams that can be seen at this time.

After crossing the bridge, we arrived at an area of corn fields. The trail is opening up and the views are getting better. The day clears at times and the breadth of the valley begins to be noticed. We keep going up!

We have already been almost 3 kilometers along the route and we have reached the highest point of the route. The trail is always without loss and very easy to follow. It's a pity that the day was overcast and that we barely had any gap between the clouds to see something of the valley. However, could be better, the views are fantastic! Several photos from a perfect natural viewpoint!

After stopping at the highest point of the route, we began to descend. Most of the remaining route would be downhill, so it would not be too physically demanding.

We begin to descend towards the valley and the day is clearing, allowing us to obtain a beautiful panoramic view. The path is very beautiful, although we must pay special attention not to slip in wet areas.

Soon we arrived near a small green lagoon, very beautiful. We continue enjoying a beautiful day of trekking, while we chat with Álvaro and Andrea, Chilean travelers willing to travel the world for a year and a half!

The rain is respecting us and we continue descending until we reach the detour through which we will continue along a wider and clearer path, also more comfortable to follow.

After 6 and a half kilometers, we reach the detour that goes to a kind of viewpoint. A natural projection over the valley. Advised by Mu, we did not hesitate to take this detour and access the natural viewpoint over the valley. The day had cleared enough to begin to contemplate the valley in all its magnitude. Rice fields, valleys, rivers and mountains! Sa Pa in its purest form!

We retraced our steps to the original path and continued the route. We are in more populated areas and we see all types of buildings. We continue one more detour.

During the route, we witness several waterfalls, some more beautiful and larger than others! Without a doubt, water flows, and that is nature!

We continue the route and come across another ledge again. It doesn't offer great views of the valley, but it is surrounded by rice fields. The large amount of green tones that the valley acquires when the rice fields are in good season is spectacular!

We continue along a comfortable path and arrive at one of the moments of the day, without a doubt. Knowing and visiting the house where Mu lives was something that, unintentionally, makes you reconsider and value what we really have. They are really tough conditions, very different and without any comfort, not at all. These are moments when you really travel, and it was a moment in which we all stopped to think that we are very lucky... I'm sure!

After visiting Mu's house, we continued the route spotting another waterfall. We continue along a comfortable path and with a spectacular day, ideal for walking!

There is less left and we continue descending, now along several curves on the path itself. Motorcycles circulate freely here, so we take special care when crossing paths with them. We saw another waterfall!

Another waterfall we found, in an area full of guest houses. The area is more populated and there is a greater atmosphere.

We have already lost most of the slope and come to one more detour. We are in the middle of the town and our Homestay is already visible in the distance, where we will spend the night. The views are still beautiful and the day is good!

We have already abandoned the main path and are once again traveling along a narrower path. There is only a little less than a kilometer left and we are advancing between rice fields and crop fields.

After more than 11 kilometers, we arrive at Mao Lenh Family Homestay, located in Sử Pán, the place where we will spend the night and where we conclude the first day of trekking.

Our stay at Mao Lenh Family Homestay was fantastic! We didn't go with any idea, not knowing what we were going to find, and even more so after visiting Mu's house. And the truth is that, when we arrived, we realized that we were going to sleep great, even if there were moments of panic in some of the members of the expedition. We were able to shower, we had a very good dinner, we enjoyed and laughed at a unique after-dinner meal with Raúl and Irene, we slept under a mosquito net and a roof and we woke up without any kind of shock. For more details, you have to go and experience it. A different, fun stay that we will always remember.

CONCLUSION:

A great day for walking. A first day of trekking with a little of everything! Height, unevenness and incredible views to savor throughout the day. We had perfect company and realized how lucky we are. A day experiencing up close the customs and way of life of the Hmong ethnic group. One of the days that we will remember the most and best of our trip to Vietnam! Highly recommended!

Sử Pán - Mao Lenh Family Homestay - Cau May Waterfall - Hầu Thào

Second day of trekking through the Sa Pa Valley! If the first day was exceptional, the second also promised similar sensations. Again with Mu as a guide through the area and a beautiful route ahead. Let's start!

START:

After the fun night we had, it was time to get up and start the day. First, a very delicious breakfast, prepared by the local people who accompanied us throughout the adventure. Next, preparing backpacks and starting the activity, together with the companions with whom we had spent the night, except Carlos and Amparo, who were returning from their trip sooner and had to return to Sa Pa earlier. We will begin the route at the Mao Lenh Family Homestay itself.

DESCRIPTION:

We take the first steps of the route along a narrow path between crop fields and rice fields.

The day promised to be hot. It's early and the sun is already shining brightly, so maximum sun protection, water and a hat!

Following a detour, we arrived at an area more populated than the area where we slept. It's Monday and the activity is noticeable. There are many people in the streets and children running around with their backpacks.

We left the town behind and visited a small waterfall, very beautiful! We continue the route along a comfortable path with a slight ascent.

We cross a wooden bridge, carefully, and follow a detour to the left to continue on the right direction. Mu is the first and the heat is noticeable...

From here, the route becomes somewhat more demanding, gaining in beauty and tranquility. The wide path of the town gives way to a narrow path that will wind into a beautiful bamboo forest. Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places we will pass through on our trek through Sa Pa.

The forest is small and we leave it following several detours, in a zig-zag fashion. The altitude and the sunny day allow us to have a beautiful panoramic view of the valley!

We leave the bamboo forest behind and arrive at a populated area, where we find a small waterfall. They are places of great activity, small shops and many people on the street.

We followed one more detour to leave the town and continued our route, now along a clear and shady path, without any difficulty.

We are at the highest point of today's route. We begin the descent and follow one more detour to continue. We see more and more children with their backpacks!

Descending from the most populated area, we find a kind of school and daycare, at which point all the children begin to leave. Seeing so many Westerners catches their attention and they don't hesitate to leave all their things and come greet us. Without a doubt, it was a unique moment! Seeing how they shake your hand, play with you, some showing how strong they are, laugh and enjoy your company, is something priceless. We once again have the feeling that we are very lucky, although we do not doubt that they are happy children, and that, even if they have little, is worth a lot! Several photos surrounded by children and with Raúl and Irene, with whom we had a good time laughing, surrounded by children of all ages! Another moment to remember!

We continue the route joining the rest of our companions, while we find another waterfall again! The area is beautiful and we are enjoying it a lot!

Once again in a populated area, we follow two detours to begin the descent towards the river, at the bottom of the valley. The path is very wide, full of curves and has no loss.

We have already traveled about 4 kilometers and reach the road that goes to Sa Pa. We follow a couple of detours to quickly leave it and continue descending towards the valley. The breadth of the landscape allows us to have stunning panoramic views!

We continue descending, between rice fields. This part will be the most beautiful, so you should pay attention to these last few meters. The road is muddy and has a steep slope. However, it is a short stretch, so we quickly completed it, without any major problems.

We reach the height of the river, which we must cross along a curious suspension bridge! Another moment to remember! The river is wide and mighty, and the bridge is several meters long. Here we go!

After crossing the bridge, we follow a detour to the right to continue along the left bank of the river. The path is wet and narrow, but it does not have any difficulty, so we are advancing without problems.

We complete the first steps next to the river and arrive at an area of rice fields, where we follow a detour to get closer to the Cau May Waterfall, very close now.

Several more meters and we reach Cau May Waterfall, a waterfall that we access by crossing a somewhat improvised bridge. In the vicinity of the waterfall, there is a kind of shop and restaurant where you can eat or drink something. Cau May Waterfall is ideal for taking a bath, it has several pools and some waterfalls. We don't hesitate to take a break, some take a bath, others put their feet in the water and others simply rest. The area is beautiful and the waterfall is very pretty, several meters high. It is evident that it is a place where many tourists pass through. Perhaps, Cau May Waterfall is one of the most frequented and visited places in the Sa Pa Valley, and surely a stopping point for all or almost all organized treks. To leave the waterfall area, we crossed another curious bridge!

We leave the Cau May Waterfall area behind and cross another beautiful bridge over the river, in order to continue our route. This area is very beautiful!

Now on the other bank of the river, we will ascend, little by little, until we reach the road again, where we would end the trekking. We passed through a more populated area and another waterfall.

We are facing the last stretch of the route. We continue gaining height, following a detour further to the right and visiting another waterfall. The views towards Cau May Waterfall are beautiful!

Finally, after several more minutes of slight ascent, we arrive at Hầu Thào, at the height of the road that goes to Sa Pa. Here we finish today's route and the trekking through Sa Pa. It will also be a refreshment point and time to say goodbye. , since each of us would have a different destiny. A multi-seat van will take us back to Sa Pa, where we finish our adventure through this beautiful valley. We said goodbye to all our companions, to Álvaro and Andrea, the Chilean travelers who are traveling the world for a year and a half, and to Raúl and Irene, with whom we would continue enjoying their company in Sa Pa, since we would spend one more night there .

CONCLUSION:

Another one of those days full of sensations! A second day of hot and demanding trekking, but full of moments to remember! Beautiful views of the Sa Pa Valley, a beautiful bamboo forest, contact with local children full of unique moments, beautiful paths along the valley and the Cau May Waterfall as the final culmination. Spectacular!

CONCLUSION:

Sa Pa did not disappoint us, and not only did it not disappoint us, but it also gave us two days of incredible sensations. Getting to know the Hmong people, the local life and customs, the difficulties and the little they have, makes you reconsider, or at least, know that we are very lucky. They were two exceptional days, with good weather, walking along beautiful trails. Forests, rice fields, beautiful views of the valley, waterfalls and moments to remember with unbeatable companions. We were lucky to meet great people and that greatly enriched our stay in Sa Pa. A hard first day, with a day of many hours walking, but beautiful, a stay at Mao Lenh Family Homestay to remember and a second day full of emotions . Our most sincere thanks to Mao and Mu, first of all, and to the rest of the companions with whom we enjoyed the trip, for making our visit to Sa Pa two days that we will always remember!
