Itinerary description
This walk starts in the medieval village of Saint-Montan, an impressive ancient village with its 11th century castle and narrow streets and alleys, of which many of the houses have been renovated but still maintain their medieval appearance.
After leaving the village along the river via the Grotte de Lourdes and the Chapelle San Samonta the track goes up, rather steeply at times and along rock slides to the Grotte de la Sainte-Baume, a so called L'Ermitage that you can enter.
To reach this place you might sometimes have to use yout hands.
Back on the track to Larnas the ascent remains steep, following the white/ yellow signs until you reach a crossing where we turned west along the track to Larnas.
Being halfway in Larnas there is an excellent picknick place to rest on the medieval church grounds of St Pierre.
From the open fields of Larnas the track disappears into the woods again first gently ascending from 310 to 340 metres along a track without many views until you reach the the descent which, at times, is quite steep.
The descent will give you magnificent views from north to south, from Roche Colombe and the synclinal of Saou Forest, the Parc naturel Regional des Baronnies, the Mont Ventoux in all is glory and the perched village, la Garde-Adhemar.
You will really have to watch your footing as there is so much to be seen and admired.
You will also have great views of the L'Ermitage, the Gorges de la Baume, and Saint-Montan itself.
A very beautiful walk!
