Itinerary description
This trek is an alternative to the Inka trail. I have done both the Salkantay and the Inka trails, and I find the Salkantay is much nicer and has fewer people. The trek is 4 days and it starts in a small town called Mollepata. It ends in Aguas Calientes. It has a relatively high pass (4600 masl) in which I had a little bit of snow falling.
In the track shown, there is a long straight segment. It corresponds to the car ride from the place you have lunch on day 3 to Santa Teresa, where you spend the night.
The trek is beautiful, and you hike through areas surrounded by snow-capped mountains, deep canyons and many different kinds of ecosystems. In the last day, you can either ride a car from Santa Teresa to Hidroelectrica, or walk along the road. From Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes you walk along the railroad tracks and the Urubamba river. During this last hike you can see Machu Picchu from below
I did this trek with Inka Peru Trek (http://www.salcantay.info/) and it was an excelent trek. YOu can also take a more expensive trek (with other companies) staying in the lodges along the way.

No recuerdo ver sino grupos organizados.

At least, prepare yourself physically and for altitude. There is a lot of companys that can guide you for around 170 dolars.
This is a comment to Rodolfo's assumption that there is companies offering a guided Salkantay for $170. This is never, ever going to happen. The train and Machu Picchu alone are around $150, so even with agency discounts, you can imagine that paying guides, mules, food and equipment is never going to happen with whatever money is left. Cheapest tours will go for around $225 and you'll have to haggle like a king and go with an a company that has 'loose ethics' at best (think big groups, overloading animals and underpaying workers, if at all). Think twice about the price, it usually represents the quality of your tour. In the case of Salkantay, just do it alone. Very feasible and a great achievement!
