Salto Oshi (King George VI) hike to bottom

With its 214m, Salto Oshi or King George VI falls is incredibly spectacular. This is not an easy place to get to, and as such, you are more than likely to have the place for yourself.

From the top, the view is magnificent, but you cannot really appreciate the falls themselves. So the hike down to the bottom of the falls is strongly recommended. You have to cover a lot of height and it is straight trough the jungle, so come prepared. Long sleeves, repellent, supplies, etc.. . There is a river to cross, so bring swimming gear/towel. In the rainy season, the steep descent/ascent might become very slippery.

The indicated distance of 13,9km is not correct!! Because of the forest, the gps reception was not good. Not sure how many kms, but definately less then 13! ;-) It took us about 2 hours to go down and 3 to come back up again.

As for way finding: at the end of the 4x4 track, you will see a walking path plunge down into the jungle below. Follow that until you come to a river: Rio Camaran. Next follow that river downstream (North). Track is not always easy to follow, just keep following the river until you come at the point where Rio Oshi joins from west. The walking paths end here. You have to find a spot here where you can cross Rio Oshi, there are several options. The river was waist deep for us, with a good current. It might become more difficult in times of rain, be careful! Once you are on the other side, you will find another trail the follows this river. Take this trail upstream until you get to the bottom of the falls. Same way back ;-)

This information/track is about accessing these falls from Venezuela. You can also approach them from Guyana, but it will involve flying with a bushplane, and then hiking/boating for several days.
