San José – Morrón de los Genoveses
This walk starts on the outskirts of San José, in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar national park. There is parking at the start, but the 150m getting to the off road parking is a bit bumpy and rocky in places, but l managed it no problem. (Parking on the tarmac road might be better if you are worried about your car).
You pick up a coastal path which will eventually bring you to the cove and beach of Los Genoveses.
From here I stayed near the water’s edge where you will eventually
come across a fossilized dune, keep going until you reach the fin the sendero sign, then keep following the path where you will pick up
the straggly path to the summit of Morrón de los Genoveses. It is a bit loose and stony underfoot, but this also didn’t cause any problems.
The 360 degree views from the summit are well worth the climb.
This is one of the most emblematic landscapes of Cabo de Gata. The cove was named after the arrival in 1147 of a Genovese fleet that attempted to conquer Almeria from Muslims. Its crescent shape seems to be linked with a volcanic structure, but this still requires confirmation.
The reliefs bordering the cove are made of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Along the beach is a perfectly preserved fossil dune system stands out.
It was a very pleasant and scenic beach hike which I thoroughly enjoyed.
