San José – Morrón de los Genoveses
My 500th walk, and a lovely linear coastal to do from the small village of San José, (20 minute drive from Cabo de Gata).
Starting from Plaza Genvoa then taking in the marina, then to Playa San José. Staying on the minor road to Mirador Josefina Huertas (the new Mirador is below the old on going down a nicely built path). This Mirador is looking out towards where we are heading.
After passing a few dwellings you pick up a coastal path which will eventually bring you to the cove and beach of Los Genoveses.
The path going through the sand dunes got lost in a few places but you do make your way through eventually, arriving at Cala de los Amarillos (where the rock formation does have a yellow tinge to it).
From here follow the straggly path to the summit of Morrón de los Genoveses.
Returning back along the beach you will come across a fossilized dune, keep going and you will eventually pick up the trail heading back.
At the next intersection I circumnavigated around the back of San José to see what the villas and houses were like.
This is one of the most emblematic landscapes of Cabo de Gata. The cove was named after the arrival in 1147 of a Genovese fleet that attempted to conquer Almeria from Muslims. Its crescent shape seems to be linked with a volcanic structure, but this still requires confirmation.
The reliefs bordering the cove are made of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Along the beach is a perfectly preserved fossil dune system stands out.
It was a very pleasant and scenic beach hike which I thoroughly enjoyed.
