Itinerary description

This is a full day’s worth of hiking and is a linear tour from San Juan de la Rambla to Mirador San Pedro (actually the bus stop before). Both these places are reached from Puerto de la Cruz on the #363 guagua.
From the bus stop, it’s a walk down the road to the sea to catch some great shots of the waves rolling in and then I followed the path up and away from the sea-front. You need to look back occasionally otherwise you’ll miss great shots of San Juan and the coast.
The route then climbs away from the coast on a metalled road to reach the busy TF-5 road, which is crossed with care. On the other side is a car park and on the right hand side are wooden steps leading to Icod El Alto. This footpath is very well-maintained: in some places there are wooden handrails to help you; a lot of the time, stones have been laid to prevent erosion and also help with traction. Although it does not say so at the bottom, you are actually climbing up Barranco Ruiz.
I think it was just over an hour’s climb before I reached Plaza Cruz de los Rodriguez, where you can take a well-deserved rest and admire the views along the coast.
There’s then a short stretch of road walking before you can take a footpath on the left marked Fuente del Rey – this is Camino Orilla de la Vera and bypasses some road.
I took a footpath to Fuente del Rey, but was disappointed by what I saw there – stone receptacles and lots of pond-weed.
You have to follow the road TF-342. If you are tired, you can finish the tour in Icod El Alto and catch the 354 bus back to Puerto. My route took me away from the main road through quiet hamlets of El Mazape and La Gallinera before bringing me to Mirador El Lance
Past the Mirador, there is a separation of footpath and road which was very welcome. However, the footpath is actually suspended on metal plates over the void! I didn’t get any views at the Mirador since the clouds had rolled in, but I was able to see the huge bronze sculpture of Mencey Bentor, a Guanche king who preferred to leap into the void from this place rather than be captured by the Castilian troops.
A bit further on and I reached a broad path set with stones that would make my descent towards the coast. It was steep in places and some stones were slippery so a cautious descent took me thirty minutes to reach Tigaiga.
Some more road-walking ensued before I found the final footpath to take me down to the coastal road TF-5 and the bus stop, which is actually the one before Mirador San Pedro.
I would do this linear tour in the direction I did since when you are walking the boring bits towards the end you can recollect all the splendid views you have had along the way.
