Itinerary description
I decided to create a four segment hiking series exploring the area east of Montserrat, and including a climb up to the Montserrat Monastery.
This, the second in the series, is just over 16 km & starts in Sant Miquel de Gonteres.
The first segment of this hike winds over forest roads for 9 km over the Serra de Collcardús until reaching Restaurant Mas Mimó- this is a special treat becuase we don't usually have the luxury of a restaurant in the middle of a hike! (Though be sure to pack some food & plenty of water in case it is not open!)
The second segment is 7 km long and more challenging; from the foot of the Carena de la Torrella our trail climbs to the top and follows along the ridge which offers beaiutiful views of the valley below and Montserrat Mountain in the distance. the trail continues climbing over the Serra de l'Hospici and around the Serrat de l'Abat before descending to the Aeri de Montserrat train station.
Though this is not a technically difficult hike, there are some areas where you will be required to use your hands to climb over rocks and boulders; additionally, the last segmant has areas with rough terrain and the descent at the end is quite steep.
The four hikes in the series are:
1) Sant Vicenç de Castellet > Sant Miquel de Gonteres
2) Sant Miquel de Gonteres > Aeri de Montserrat,
3) Aeri de Montserrat > Monistrol de Montserrat (climbing up to the Montserrat Monastery from the foot of the mountain) and,
4) Monistrol de Montserrat > Sant Vicenç de Castellet.
Once completed, the series will cover approx 75 km.
