Itinerary description
This route was originally following this:
https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/salt-del-mir-des-de-sant-quirze-de-besora-i-lermita-sant-salvador-del-prat-12283572
So please reference that for more detailed instructions. This route skips the section of the above that goes to the hermitage, and links to the train station at Sant Quirze de Besora. Probably best avoided if it has rained heavily as there’s a lot of river crossing.
Arriving by train at Sant Quirze de Besora, head south out of town along the road to a small industrial estate and then begin climbing along a ridge line marked with the red and white flashes of the GR 3.
A reasonably steep, steady climb which breaks into some great views, first just on the right and then panoramic views all around. Take some care with footing as the path crosses some sloping rock.
Break off from the GR 3 shortly after the ruins of El Bosquetell - there’s a signpost to Salt de Mir. A short, slightly steep climb takes you to the top of a ridge with a great view opposite to the ruins of Castell de Besora.
There’s a small path leading off the ridge down toward the Salt de Mir, which is steep in places. After plenty of shady woods, it opens out into a rockier area where there are red signs pointing to the left, which show the way to the ruined mills and the waterfall.
Worth popping your head into the mills which still have some of their old grinding equipment in place, before heading down several steps of stone and wooden steps to the waterfall itself.
When we went there wasn’t much water so you could get right beneath the falls and into the impressive cave carved out behind it.
Then head back up and take the path to the right, crossing a small bridge before taking the left that takes you down the valley with occasional views of the Castell de Besora.
If you wish to go to the hermitage, please see the above track - it probably adds around 45 minutes. Otherwise continue down a small path to the left of the larger track which takes you to the river Foradada which you have to cross back and forth multiple times - take good boots. The crossings are quite fun and the track takes you back to the same industrial estate as at the start.
