Sant Vicenç de Castellet to Sant Miquel de Gonteres 23.7 km

I decided to create a four segment hiking series exploring the area east of Montserrat, and including a climb up to the Montserrat Monastery. This, the first hike in the series, is nearly 24 km & starts to the north-east of Montserrat in Sant Vicenç de Castellet. From there, we'll walk the length of the western edge of the Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac, through Rellinars village and finish at Sant Miquel de Gonteres.

The first part of this hike climbs gradually for 10 km over forest roads. In Rellinars, there is an excellent place to have a sneck break in a picnic zone just on the other side of town.

The second part follows the Riera de Rellenars and is 4.5 km a bit more challenging; crisscrossing the riverbed it becomes a steeper, wooded footpath until finally reaching Casa Nova de l'Obac. At the top of this rocky ascent you'll be rewarded with beautiful views of Montserrat and a little cafe! (only open on weekends, though!)

The last part of the hike descends over the remaining 9 km, first, gradually along the road, and then more steeply along a rocky footpath on the east-facing slope of the ridge and, finally, ending along the Torrent de Gaià. Keep in mind that since this segment is along the eastern aspect, it will be chilly in the winter months - be sure to bring warm clothing so you're prepared for the drop in temperature!

The four hikes in the series are:
1) Sant Vicenç de Castellet > Sant Miquel de Gonteres; 24 km
2) Sant Miquel de Gonteres > Aeri de Montserrat; 16 km
3) Aeri de Montserrat > Monistrol de Montserrat (climbing up to the Montserrat Monastery from the foot of the mountain)
4) Monistrol de Montserrat > Sant Vicenç de Castellet.

Once completed, the series will cover approx 75 km.
