Itinerary description
Santa Cruz Trek in 2days, Vaqueria-Cashapampa.
1. Colectivo Huaraz-Yungay (actually got in the Laguna 69 tour bus & paid the driver S/. 5). About 1hour.
2. Colectivo Yungay-Vaqueria, 3 very bumpy hours. S/. 15 (driver tried to overcharge - do not give in to him & overpay)
3. Started at 11am, hiked from Vaqueria to 4,250m where I was forced to take shelter & camp due to a hail & lightning storm.
4. On the trail at 6:45am, hiked over the pass & all the way down to Cashapampa, going to the Alpamayo Mirador but not the lake as it was raining heavily & very cloudy.
5. Arrived in Cashapampa at 3:30pm, 1hour after the last colectivo to Caraz had departed, so camped (for free) in the garden of a house near the start of the trail. Tour group also camped here.
6. Got colectivo taxi to Caraz in the morning (S/. 10, 1hour), then colectivo to Huaraz (S/. 6, 1hr 30mins).
Total cost: S/. 36 (transport) + food
No idea how/why this is advertised as a 4day hike, it is a 3day hike that can be done in 2days. Much better to start in Vaqueria, it is at a much higher elevation & you avoid about 500m of extra uphill.
