Itinerary description

An easy ridgetop walk eastwards from the house, passing hunting towers and lodges, and through leafy glades high above the Malerreka valley. This walk takes place under the constant vigil of the mountain of Mendaur, with its distinctive chapel at 1130 m. Below in the river valley are the white-washed villages of ITUREN and ELGORRIAGA with views over towards the Baztan Valley and the French border. This walk dips down into SANTESTEBAN/DONESTEBE (which has shops, banks, restaurants, bars and a bicycle hire shop) before making its way back alongside the river to pretty ELGORRIAGA (famous for its mushroom festival) - with its great restaurant Hilarion, village bar and spa baths (which also has a bar and a restaurant). The walk then winds its way back towards ITUREN past mountain barns, streams and crumbling homesteads before entering the village through farm lands and vegetable gardens. Return climbing back to AMEZTIA from ITUREN. This walk can be combined with the ELGORRIAGA MUSHROOM ROUTE 4.5km, the GAZTELU, DONAMARIA LOOP 16.2KM and the ITUREN VILLAGE TOUR 4km.
