Itinerary description

Why worthwhile? Highest mountain in the region - very good view at the top because of the height.

Starting point: Lünersee cable railway (large parking space). [Brand 1037m.]

Time: about 5½ - 6 hours

Details: well marked, some wire ropes for protection. Quite long tour to make in one day.

Route description:

Schesaplana is the highest summit in the Rätikon-region and visited by many people - especially during holidays and weekends. Overall the climb is not so difficult and well marked, but the many people on the route can be a bit annoying after a while.

We take the cable railway and in about 5 minutes we are at a large lake called Lünersee. Outside the building we follow our way to the right-hand side of the lake on a wide sandy road (signs "Totalphütte" and "Schesaplana"). After about 15 to 20 minutes, almost at the lakes right back side, we see a junction. Here we follow the small path to the right leading upwards towards the Totalphütte (signpost Totalphütte). This path is well marked, easy to see, but sometimes a bit steep.

At the Totalphütte we walk to the other side of the alpine hut and follow the red-point-marked path towards the mountain ridge we see ahead of us (aiming point: a signpost on top of the ridge). At this signpost (Tote Alp) we follow the well marked mounting to the summit of Schesaplana. This climb is partly protected with wire ropes!

The way back is the same as the way there. At the Lünersee cable railway (Douglasshütte) we can also go down on foot by taking the Böser-Tritt-Steig (a +/- 45 minute walk). Also see the signposts at the Douglasshütte.

Done in 1993 and 1996.
