Itinerary description
IMPORTANT:
If you are doing this route please find another route to descend from Storjordting (18,7 km to 18,9 km). Not only this is a very steep area, it is also full of loose rock and loose soil. A few hundred meters to the east you will find a much better way down. Except for this 200 metres the remaining route should be fine even if some ascents (Piggfjellet) and descends (into the fjord) are a bit steep they are still safe.
Very beautifull and diverse route through the south of Seiland starting in Seiland house in Altneset and going into the Melke (Milky) river valley passing in some summits that are amazing viewpoints such as the Piggfjellet and the Storjordting as well as many many lakes particularly Nordre Steinvatnet, Søre Steinvatnet and the Melkevatna (lakes from the Melke river.
The Melke river takes its name for the milky look of its waters, fed by the island biggest glacier Seilandsjøkelen. Through a series of lakes and rapids the mighty tiver finds its way into Bekkarfjorden.
The route starts just behind Seiland House, follow the stream and cross to the left of it, if you find the blue marks on the trees you just have to follow them, they go almost all the way until Piggfjellet through the woods and into the plateau.
On the last hundred metres we took a direct aproach to the Piggsfjellet peak(s) but if you follow the valley for a bit longer before turning left to the peak it is less steep.
There are several peaks along a ridge, Piggfjellet being the highest, but for me the one with the best view is a little more to the west with stunning views over Rognsundet and Store Kufjorden.
From here you continue going east for 2,5km, gaining little elevation until you reach a col, from here you can see the rolling grassy plateau between Sommarsetvatnet Sokkmyrdalen and further way the Melke valley and the Bekkarfjorden. Go down to the right side of the Sommarsetvatnet and keep going northeast until you reach the Melkeva valley.
The river bank is sometimes very steep so our route sometimes follows a bit further apart from the river, but you can still see it from above and also allows nice views to the glacier very close to the north.
At km 13 we leave the Melkeva and start heading back in the direction of the norde Steinvatnet. We follow the north side of the lake crossing through a narrow and beautifull isthmus between Steinvatnet and another lake. Its amazing how many islands there are on this lake. The whole landscape seams like a game between rock and water with numerous bays and countless islands on the lake.
When we reach the western tip of the lake we start going south in the direction of Storjordting,
From Storjordting we have once again amazing views over the Kufjorden and all the way into Seilandstuva. We can also see again Altneset, the starting and ending point for the route.
DONT TRY TO GET DOWN FROM STORJORDTING FOLLOWING THIS ROUTE, we advise against it, Not only this is a very steep area, it is also full of loose rock and loose soil. A few hundred meters to the east you will find a much better way down.
Once you are down from the summit you can again follow our route.
The way down to the fjord is steep but should be ok and in late August or September is full of bluberries.
Once you you reach the fjord just follow the coast back to Altneset.
Have a nice hike and remenber this is a long and tiring route without trails suited for experienced hikers.
