Senda de fuente cobre - nacimiento del Pisuerga - Santa María de Redondo

We started the hike from the parking about 800m from Santa María de Redondo, where an informative panel describes the route and the characteristics of the environment. Right after the start, we pass through a small bridge which helps to cross Lombatero stream and we continue the path which goes paralel to and old coal mine dump until we reach another bridge over Pisuerga river.

From here onwards the way is going up all time leaving the river at your left hand side and you need to cross another bridge to face the first fork. Next to it there is a sign limiting the access to vehicules.

We keep the way in the right (we'll use the one in the left for the return), until the convergence of the two valleys.

Pisuerga river starts receiving water from Tejedo stram at your right. Withouth crossing the river, and after passing free range fields, the way, which now becomes just a small trail, keeps going up close to the river.

This is one of the best parts of the itinerary. The trail passes through a understory of beechs, oaks, hollies, hazelnuts, birchs and whitebeams, some times by the empty course of a torrent.

Once the path finally exists the understory we will find inmediatelly small waterfalls and a bit further the Fuente del cobre (Copper Spring), topped with the crests of limestone outcrops.

You can return via the same way or use an alternative one, which is the one we take and it's well signed by the steps of all the visitors. It starts directly from the very entrance of the cave and it will take us along the mountainside where there are couple of places with security rails enabled as stones may fall.

Underneath us you can see the valley and to the left beech forests. We arrive to a pen where the cows rest. From there we have a great panoramic view of all the summits of the Peña Labra mountain chain.

After the fold we follow the path that goes across an oak and beech forest and we descend until we get to the original fork and the way is already known. We just need to go back that small part till we reach the parking again.

*Fuente del Cobre cave has always been considered as the beginning of the Pisuega river; however, it's trully starting point is few kilometers higher, in the mountain sides of Valdecebollas peak (2.139 mt). The water gathered by small streams and small ponds are filtered through a pothole into the Sel de la Fuente drain which appears back again two kilometers after in the entrance of the cave.

Comenzamos la ruta en el parking habilitado a unos 800mts de Santa Maria de Redondo, donde un panel informativo nos describe la ruta y las características del entorno, casi nada mas empezar,cruzamos un puente que salva el Arroyo Lombatero y seguimos la pista que transcurre paralela a la escombrera de una antigua mina de carbón y que nos lleva a otro puente sobre el río Pisuerga.

A partir de aquí el camino asciende dejando el río a la izquierda y hemos de cruzar un puente más y pronto nos encontraremos con una bifurcación. Junto al cruce hay una señal que limita el acceso de vehículos.

Continuamos por la derecha (el camino que dejamos a la izquierda será por donde efectuemos el regreso), hasta la confluencia de dos valles.

El Pisuerga recibe a nuestra derecha las aguas del Arroyo de Tejedo. Sin cruzar el río, tras pasar por unas camperas, el camino, ahora apenas un sendero, asciende por el fondo del valle, cerca del río.

Este es uno de los tramos más atractivos del itinerario. El sendero transcurre bajo un sotobosque de hayas, robles, acebos, avellanos, abedules y mostajos, a veces por el cauce seco de algún torrente.

Cuando por fin el camino abandone la espesura nos encontraremos de súbito con unas pequeñas cascadas y algo más arriba la Fuente del Cobre, coronada por las crestas de unos farallones calizos.

El regreso se puede efectuar por la misma ruta o por un sendero alternativo, el cual es que escogemos y bien marcado por el continuo trasiego de los visitantes, que parte de la misma boca de la cueva y que nos llevará por la ladera donde en alguna zona han habilitado unas pasarelas como medida de seguridad ya que esta zona esta bastante erosionada y hay desprendimientos de pizarra.

Abajo divisamos el valle y a la izquierda hermosos bosques de haya. Llegamos a una majada donde descansan las vacas. Desde aquí podemos disfrutar de una excelente panorámica de las cumbres de la Sierra de Peña Labra.

Pasamos la majada y tomamos una pista que nos introduce enseguida en un bosque de roble y haya por el que descendemos hasta encontrarnos con la bifurcación y el camino por que hicimos la ascensión y ya solo nos queda desandar ese breve tramo hasta llegar al praking dando por concluida la ruta.

*La cueva de Fuente del Cobre ha sido considerada como lugar de nacimiento del río Pisuerga,sin embargo su verdadero origen está unos kilómetros más arriba, en las laderas del Pico Valdecebollas (2.139 mt) Las aguas recogidas por varios arroyos y pequeñas lagunas, se filtran por una sima en el sumidero del Sel de la Fuente, para surgir dos kilómetros más adelante por la boca de la cueva.
