Sendero Arroyo del Descansadero (In reverse), Benamahoma
This is part of a trilogy of walks that start from the Los Llanos del Campo recreation area, just on the outskirts of Benamahoma.
They are all short and scenic walks and can be all done in one morning or afternoon. The recreation area has a large off road car park, and there are also lots f picnic tables scattered about, so you can enjoy a break after the walks.
It is a 15 minute drive from Grazalema and the car park is on your right adjacent to Km37.
This lovely linear route I have done in reverse to save driving to the other end where there is very limited parking.
The only downside with doing it in reverse is that it goes eventually downhill quite a bit, so that you have the uphill climb all the way back to the Llanos del Campo car park.
The path parallels the road for a while passing the fountain del Descansadero (plenty water here). You have to go down a damp path to get to the fountain which is hidden by bushes and reeds.
Next you pass the ruins of an old kiln.
Then the icing on the cake is the ruins of the flour mill – Molino del Susto, which has water gushing down it like a waterfall from the Descansadero stream, and also several trees growing in the middle of the mill.
Eventually going down stone steps you come to the old irrigation canal (very little to see), which is on your right, and you arrive at the edge of the A372 road. From here retrace your steps back to the start.
Another enjoyable walk to finish the Benamahoma trilogy.
A small sign in the vicinity of the ruins of the mill reminds us of its history and the origin of its name: Susto - Scare
«Noises of crying children, doors opening, glare of lights, sightings of UFOs ... all these stories surround one of the many flour mills that are in the National Park of the Sierra de Grazalema, the Molino del Susto.
Built in the early seventeenth century, (...) destroyed after the Civil War and due to the humidity conditions, it tries to resist the passage of time by transforming itself into the phantasmagorical structure we see, where the ideal conditions are given for the proliferation of mosses, lichens, ferns and especially ghost legends.
