Sendero de la Coja – Torre de la Romera, Benahavis
This is a linear walk starting on the outskirts of Benahavis.
The Coja path will take you to the Fortress of al-Award. Be prepared to discover de remains of an ancient farmhouse that existed at the foot of the Montemayor Castle, built as a refuge by great Malaga vizier and poet al-Lamayi, who expressly requested to be buried here.
The current remains, known as Tower of the Romera, are hidden under a canopy of trees and include a ditch, a fountain and several pools. In the past, there were gardens and an orchard with an ancient winepress. It was a place of rest for the vizier.
This is a good spot to have a break. You can climb to the top of the tower where you will have better views. Be careful inside the tower as the roof is crumbling in.
On the return journey there is an added slightly challenging detour to go to a lookout point.
