Trail made on August 17, 2017, with an invested time of 3h and 10m, including all the stops made.

To get to the Briksdal glacier, we start from the town of Olden, located about 23 km from the glacier; We go around the fantastic Lake Floen and arrive at the Briksdalsbre Fjellstove refuge.

The 11 square kilometer Briksdal glacier is located between two of Norway's most famous fjords, the Dreams and the Geiranger. It is one of the arms of the imposing Jostedal or Jostedalsbreen glacier that, with its 450 square km, is the largest ice mass in continental Europe.

Jostedalsbreen is not a remnant of the last ice age, around 12,000 years ago, but arose later, around 500 BC. C., due to a cooling of the climate. Around 1750, coinciding with the Little Ice Age, the glacier enjoyed its greatest extension. Since then, this and other glaciers have tended to decline.

In 2006 the Briksdalsbreen arm, that of Briksdal, lost about 50 meters of ice in a few months. Other analyzes made later point to a greater setback, some 146 m that warn of the danger that the separation of this arm from the upper ice field would pose. For this reason mountaineering in the area has been prohibited.

We started the walk starting from the parking area, next to a cafeteria and the visitor center in the Briksdal refuge, where we were struck by the existence of some small vehicles, for six people, including the driver, called trolls cars, to those who did not wish to walk the path.

We walk along the path, perfectly signposted, parallel to a river with very rough waters coming from the glacier and surrounded by a fantastic landscape composed of countless waterfalls, some of them with an impressive height, mountain systems with large peaks and large areas of forest.

We reached the fabulous Kleivafossen waterfall and wrapped in a thick mass of sprayed water, which soaked us beautifully, we crossed the river through a bridge with unbeatable views of the waterfall and the glacier.

We went through a forest area, crossed a new bridge and after traveling approximately 1.5 km, we came to a beautiful lake, Briksdalsbrevatnet. The lake is 346 meters above sea level, formed by the melting of the glacier. We are puzzled by the towering sky blue ice masses of the Svartenibba glacier and mountain system to our right.

We walked for a long time along the shore of the lake, took off our shoes and put our feet in its waters as the tradition of the place dictates; by the way, this one was quite "frozen".

We reached the tongue of the glacier and although we wanted to get even closer to the ice, it was not possible because access was prohibited due to the risk of collapse.

After enjoying the environment, like a child on Three Kings Day, we decided to return; but this time we opted to go part of the descent along the track where the trolls cars were circulating. Also on this route the views were impressive. Of course, we had to be careful because the trolls, although they circulated at very low speed, were so many that they did not stop continuously overtaking us.

Once at the starting point, we wandered around the refuge, we returned to recreate ourselves with the wild waters of the river and we ended this extraordinary adventure.

We leave you some photographs to encourage you to do this route.

And remember: leave the trail as you would like to find it.

POINT OF EMPHASIS

The assessment that each person makes of a route after completing it is very subjective, since it depends on many factors: age, physical preparation, technical preparation, required equipment, characteristics of the terrain, weather conditions, etc .; Therefore, it is necessary that we state that what is described in this report and the parameters that appear in it (time, distance, degree of difficulty, GPS tracks and waypoints) are merely informative / indicative and, therefore, it is under the responsibility who wants to do it take the appropriate measures.
