Itinerary description

Sendero La Rejia, Tolox

This sendero starts about 1.6km from the Hotel Cerro de Hijar, in the heart of the Sierra de las Nieves.
From Tolox follow the signs to the Balneario, and then take the road sharp right going uphill into the mountains. The hotel is on the right, and there is parking around, but not a lot.
From the hotel follow the dirt road until you arrive at the signpost for Sendero La Rejia, (also known as Regía), which receives its name from the highest waterfall in the province of Malaga, with 51 metres in length.

This route doesn’t go to the waterfall, but you can see it in the distance.
From the starting point, in the so-called Alto de la Cuesta, take the lane left to start walking through a firebreak, from which you will have to turn right shortly after to take a path that runs along the foothills of the mountains. The track gradually descends so that on the left you can see the riverbed of the Rio Caballos. Its course does not have a great flow, but the fall of its waters and that of its tributaries from high levels do manage to feed the waterfalls of the Rejía and Horcajuelos and the so-called Poza de la Virgen (Pond of the Virgin).

Some streams will be crossed, such as those of Salpo and Palmarejo. After crossing the latter, you will have to make a climb that reaches a fork. In this case you will have to turn left. After crossing a thick pine forest you reach the one known as the Machoruela hill, which is an
excellent viewpoint to see both the Salto de la Rejía and the Rio Caballos.

Make your way back to the intersection where you will have to turn left to continue the ascent that reaches a firebreak that crosses the lane that goes to Puerto de las Golondrinas, where this Sendero ends.
From there you can observe the geo diversity of the environment, in which there are interesting contrasts between the greyish limestone and the reddish, more predominant peridotite.

I made this route circular to make it more interesting.
