Itinerary description

This track is the route of the E4 European Long Distance Trail from Jalovik Izvor to Dmitrovgrad in Serbia based on Map 13 of "Rambling through Serbia at a slow pace", a booklet published by Planinarski Savez Srbije (PSS), the Serbian Mountain Association. While the track is close to the trail described in the booklet, I cannot guarantee it is the exact route or indeed the best, all I can say is that I successfully walked it in April 2018. More details of my trip can be found in my blog johnpone4serbia.blogspot.com.
The track starts at the small village of Jalovik Izvor with its white washed church, crossing woods beside a mountain to reach the Bigar waterfall. I then failed to find the correct track over the next range of mountains, so the route here goes by road to Balta Berilovac. A good trail then climbs to the rocks of Babin Zub in the Stara Planina mountains, followed by a descent to the mostly abandoned village of Topli Do. Steep sided river valleys then lead to the artificial lake of Zavojsko Jezero. After following the wide valley bottom the route then climbs a ridge over to a monastery and then on to the town of Dmitrovgrad, close to the border with Bulgaria.
This track continues from my previous walk recorded at https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/serbia-e4-long-distance-european-trail-from-sokobanja-to-jalovik-izvor-25472000. For the next part of my walk see https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/bulgaria-e4-and-sultans-trail-from-serbian-border-to-sofia-25556011

For my complete trek on the E4 across Europe read my book "Six Pairs of Boots: Spain to Cyprus on the E4 Trail" by John Pucknell available from Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com, the Bookdepository.com, lehmanns.de, bookspot.nl, and other good online bookstores.

Babin Zub

Babin Zub is a rocky summit at 1758 metres. It means Grandma's tooth, although there are several rocky "teeth". It is in the Stara Planina (which means Old Mountains), close to Midzor, one of the highest mountains in Serbia. The area is a ski resort with several ski lifts and is also popular with hikers in the summer.

Path overgrown and blocked

This section of path appears no longer in use and is becoming overgrown and is blocked by large branches left by tree felling operations. You can bypass this section by following the track from Rudina (by the last houses).

Joined path here

The track follows where the path should have gone according to the map, in reality the path took a more direct route down from the top of the ridge. The waypoint is the point at which I joined the actual path.

Impassable route

I had considered following a track on the map that passes through this waypoint, however it was overgrown and impassable. I succeeded in following the track I have uploaded to wikiloc.com.
