Itinerary description

Nice route which combined visit to Manasija monastry, Resava cave and walking alonside canyon of river Suvaja. Manasija monastery, also known as Resava, is a Serb Orthodox monastery near Despotovac, Serbia, founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević (son of Prince Lazar who leader Serbs forces on Kosovo battle) between 1406 and 1418. The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It is one of the most significant monuments of medieval Serbian culture and it belongs to the "Morava school". The monastery is surrounded by massive walls and towers. Immediately following its foundation, the monastery became the cultural center of the Serbian Despotate. Its Resava School was well known for its manuscripts and translations throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, even after the fall of the Despotate to the Ottoman Turks. Manasija complex was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia, and monastery have entered a UNESCO Tentative List Process in 2010
Resava cave is the first cave to be prepared for visits in Serbia. The length of the cave totals to 2,850 meters and the tourist paths is 800 m long. The air temperature is 7 °C and the average humidity 80%-100%. Cave consists of three floors of passages and halls connected by artificial tunnels and decorated by pillars and coral-like calcite deposits in various colours. Only parts of the first and second floors (Upper and Lower Gallery) have been prepared for visits. An underground river flows through the lowest floor (Third Gallery). The visitor to Resava can tour its numerous halls with different cave ornaments. The cave is very rich in cave ornaments of various shapes and colors and is richer than other tourist caves in the concentration of its decorations.
Lisine or Veliki Buk waterfall located on the Resava River in the east Serbia. It is carved in the karst area, where the sinking river of the Resava springs again from the ground in the canyon-type valley of Sklop. With the height of 25 meters, it was considered the highest waterfall in Serbia until 1990s when three higher ones were discovered in the Visok region.

Amazing source of information. We have never been hiking in Serbia but really want to. In the pictures I can see that people are hiking in big groups mostly. Is it safe to hike just with the family with one kid? Your advice and recommendations are very much appreciated.

Dear hannie_ackerfeld. Serbia has very nice hiking trials. People hike also in small groups or individually. It's safe to hike with family if you have experience in mountaineering/hiking although I would always recommend group (not necessarily big one). I will be glad to assist you once you decide to hike in Serbia. Best
