Sierra de Alcaparaín Circular
The best way to get to the start of this walk is to go into Ardales, then get back onto the A357 (coming back on yourself). As soon as you pass Km24 take the first turning on your right and take the dirt track road. At the first intersection you come to, turn right and drive for about 1Km where you will come to a helicopter pad and water deposit (for the firefighters).
There is ample parking.
This very peaceful route takes the forester’s gravel road to circumnavigate this beautiful mountain range.
The climb to the highest Plato is gradual and takes about 3 – 3 ½ hours.
The descent is a bit steeper, but not a problem at all.
The area is densely populated with Pine and Holm oak trees, and there are lovely panoramic views. The two main villages you see are El Burgo and Carratraca.
You will pass the Colegial fountain around the 4km mark.
It is not an overly hard walk, but it is long at 6 – 6 ½ hours.
