Sierra de Mijas after the Fire 2 – Sendero Fuente del Acebuche

I did this route about 6 years ago before my Wikiloc days.
I must admit it was a bit soul destroying to see how much damage has been done by the recent fire.

The first section to the Acebuche fountain and Forester’s house is ok. From here on in the fire damage gets progressively worse, and some places worse than others. There are some areas where the air is acrid from the charred remains.

This Sendero has a lot more damage than the route I did last week (Sendero del Conde).

I would hazard a guess that out of the 10,3km of this route at least
5- 6km has damage and overall about 60% has been affected.
The amount of shade was about 50-60%.

From Puerto La Encina and starting the decline the fire had wreaked a lot of damage.
Approaching La Nariz del Buey was slightly difficult to go around this rock formation as it was hard to see any path (although there are 3 rocks marked with red and white stripes). There was one section with a chain, but some extra chains in places would be beneficial.

Once past this challenging section it gets easy, and when you get around the mountain you get some lovely panoramic views of the Guadalhorce valley all the way down to the Bay of Málaga.

From what I saw it will take a long time for this area to recover. I still think about 75% of the trees will recover eventually.

I would recommend not doing this Sendero on your own, and also if you suffer from vertigo, as going around the Nariz del Buey you have a steep drop.

There were several trees fallen on the path and lots of small rock falls in places. Unfortunately this sendero needs a major clean up and some safety issues addressed.

If you don’t focus on the damage too much it is still a good hike.

The fire was officially declared extinguished on Wednesday 3rd August, 20 days after it initially started. It was one of the largest forest fires in Andalucía this summer. The fire affected more than 1800 hectares from Alhaurin La Torre to Mijas to Alhaurin el Grande. Some 20 aircraft and 400 personnel were involved in putting out the fire.

To get to the start of the walk take the slip road that goes into the La Paca Urbanisation, which is opposite the El Mirador hotel.
Take the second turning on your right (calle Tomillo), which then merges with Camino forestal. Follow this for 900m where you will find parking near the edge of the forest.
